He does? Hmmm, that's nice to know.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
He raised $314,000 for Save the Children charity. :D

That's pretty cool.

Hey, absolutely shitty people often do charities. Look at Child's Play.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So...that wouldn't make them absolutely shitty. They may have some shitty qualities (and I think pewdiepie has admitted to some of these and changed habits? I don't follow him) but they are not absolutely shitty.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Not if you believe that virtue is determined solely by adherence to a set of specific rules about what one can say, and that real-world actions are irrelevant. Then a person can be "absolutely" shitty no matter what they do, as long as they've violated specific codes. A lot of religions develop the same way, really.

I don't think Jerry Holkins is an especially shitty person. He seems like a decent guy.

cloud_riven: Bill from Pokemon side-eying to the left! Judging you! (*animu sweatdrop*)

Huh. Now that I'm going to research that charity stuff you menioned, same. He's aight then in my book.

Btw, that art of him reminds me of One Piece.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree with Chard for once. Shitty people can donate plenty of money to charities. It doesn't make them good people.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Watch Markiplier. He is a legitimately cool and successful person who donates to charity! With 100% less rape jokes, too. (No, I will never forgive Pewdie for that.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
He still does that? I don't watch him anymore but I thought he promised to stop.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Pewdiepie seems to me like a decent guy who's had the fortune to be able to do what he likes for monies. He was doing it before he got paid big bucks for it, and if enough people like/view his vids for him to live off it why the hell shouldn't he? I think it's bullshit that companies pay megabucks to athletes, but it's not like they're snatching the money away from me.

It's nice that he donates to charity, but I don't feel like that's a REQUIREMENT for him to be a decent person, you know? Like, if I was suddenly rolling in money I would pay off my parents mortgage and fix my grandma's house and pay my siblings' tuition and my mom's medical bills before I gave a bit to charity, and I don't feel like that would make me a shitty person.

if someone's a dick, supporting a cause doesn't erase it. far as i'm concerned, it makes it worse, because it makes it seem like they're just doing it for brownie points and not cuz they actually give a damn.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think Pewdiepie is overall great. I mean, I think his humor has kind of run dry, and he's not really as funny or authentic in his Let's Plays as he was (but man did his Amnesia vids make me cry from laughter). I don't really understand why he gets so much hate. He's always seemed like a nice guy to me, reaches out to interact with his fans and have fun with them at cons and stuff, has been donating to charities for a long time now. It seriously confuses me on why he is hated - understandably his humor is super juvenile to some, and I guess he made a couple rape jokes in his amnesia playthrough (of the "ahhh please don't rape me, monster" sort, not about anyone else) - which he actually apologized for and said he wouldn't do any more - so I feel like I'm missing the hate reason? Is it just because he is overexposed on Youtube or something?

I personally just find him shrill and annoying. I prefer VideoGamesAwesome for my play thoughts.

Overexposure is most of it, I think. I know I'd be infuriated by having him pushed down my throat if I hadn't somehow been able to completely fail to notice his existence until a few months ago and find him funny.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
He's just obnoxious and part of the "Hey, comedy is just screaming and stupid voices, right?" sect of Internet humor. That's why I dislike him, at least. He's just... not funny. MONKEYCHEESE RANDUMB is pretty played out.

Also I'm butthurt that at this point he is the most well-known thing about the magnificent Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I like him, but then I have watched only a small fraction of his vids and I'm not in youtube/LP fandom at all. I didn't even know he was that well known. Only found him last year because there was a bit in Amnesia that I couldn't get the timing right on and his LPs were the first to show up when I searched for a walkthrough. *shrugs*

TW: rape

[personal profile] annethecatdetective 2014-05-08 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that he made rape jokes during his LP that makes me think he's absolutely an asshole, it's that when survivors say 'hey, this is intensely triggering', there is no honest apology. And when his fans jump on those survivors to make further rape 'jokes' and even threats, he doesn't step in to tell them that isn't cool, and may have contributed. I'm not as up on this story as some-- I never watched any of his LPs, myself, I just have friends who got fed up with how awful the comments sections would get if anyone voiced the slightest critique in terms of how hey, maybe shouting 'rape' repeatedly isn't a joke and maybe it can hurt/upset people.

There's nothing nice or decent about that. The nice/decent response would be to apologize-- even if you don't think you did something wrong, even if you believe the person is being too sensitive, it costs you nothing to say 'sorry'. Only a real asshole then says 'haha hope you get raped', and only a real asshole sees their fans have that response and doesn't shut it down by saying there's a line you shouldn't cross.

(I'm not really comfortable calling the 'apology' he issued that-- it really seemed like a 'no, I'm a good person' thing, very insincere and calculated for personal gain. But that's the only video I'm at all familiar with and the awfulness of most of his fans means I'm not likely to look at any of his other videos)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I think that he is genuinely a nice guy. He's even been countlessly in awe of his success and also making sure that he does something useful with his earnings... there are youtubers out there like that, but there are also those who're not unfortunately.
I used to be a hardcore bro from the early days and now I'm a little bored but I still think Pewds is a good guy, especially considering how 'fame' can change people and youtubers that suddenly get noticed.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I watch a lot of Let's Players and I have to say that Pewdiepie is practically the only player I've run into that I've thought, 'urgh, he's horrible' after hearing him. He recently did some videos with mangaminx, and two other guys (I think dlive and ohmwrecker) and spent the whole time acting shittily towards her. He simultaneously managed to come over as a rude asshole with a massive ego, and as being really insidiously sexist. The videos were uncomfortable; if he doesn't like her, why do a collab with her?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, they're pretty good friends as far as I know. I'm a fan of both and Minx isn't the type to put up with that behavior you described. And I also stalk both their twitters, whenever they've interacted they seem pretty chummy. You're probably projecting.
