Hey, don't worry about it. We all have ups and downs when it comes to producing things. As long as you leave comments (or at least kudos/likes/etc.) you're still taking an active part!

I used to feel this way. I don't anymore because I don't care. I'm happy. Other people are happy. It's needless guilt. I left it behind.

So?

It's like right there. All that fanwork. Why not eat it all, it's not like anyone's looking.

LOL this is a great and imaginative bg pic for this secret, OP ;)

I understand what you mean with the first part. It's tough interacting in fandom sometimes.

Whenever I try to discuss fandom things, I just end up embarrassing myself. Even though sharing headcanons are fun, some people think of amazing yet relevant things. Meanwhile, mine don't really measure up. Plus, I can't draw well and my ideas for fics are just too far-fetched at times.

Perhaps it's easier to "casually" enjoy fics and art without interacting with the fandom so much? It seems that way, but then there's the feeling of missing out. :/

If you feel bad about not contributing, there's one thing you can always do - comment. Almost all authors and fanartists love to get feedback, it motivates them, it makes them want to write/draw more. So if you want to contribute somehow, let your fandoms' writers and artists know that their work is appreciated. I wish more 'lurkers' in fandom did that instead of just doing nothing.

Eh, not everyone is a writer or artist; it's nothing to feel guilty or ashamed about. If you want to get involved somehow then comment, leave kudos, maybe learn to create gifs... You could also write meta or make a community for your fandom! Even just talking to others about your interests (maybe rec'ing to friends? That way you might end up bringing more people into the fandom, who then might get involved as well) is contributing in a way.

I think you should not feel bad. Everyone goes to the fandom for different things. Also, producers are having fun in their way and do what they do anyway, and they probably just would be happy to know that you like what they do.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, just leave feedback. as someone who writes, I love getting comments.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad, OP! If you leave kudos or maybe an occasional comment, that's enough for most people who produce fanworks. I mean, there's a lot of stuff out there, might as well enjoy it!

Meh, I don't. I add artwork when ever I get the itch to do something. Otherwise, I just read and go on my way.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't feel bad! You're under no obligation to contribute. Just being there (reading/viewing) is participation, and you should do what you need/enjoy. I certainly don't expect everyone who reads my fics to write fics of their own and/or produce fanart.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, you're the reason writers write and artists draw. You are contributing by consuming our output. You're an incredibly vital part of fandom.

I mean, speaking as a fanfic writer, my ego gets an incredible boost when someone reads my stuff, whether or not they produce their own. Rock on.

Hey, you don't have to feel bad. There's no element of equivalent exchange when it comes to fandom. You don't owe the author anything for reading their fic (although a comment would surely be appreciated~), and the same goes for other fanworks. As long as you're okay with it, there's nothing wrong with interacting with fandom in a more anonymous/passive way. Just have fun. :)

Not everyone can so it's nothing to feel guilty for tbh, besides everyone contributes in their own way even if it's just reblogging gifsets/fanart/fic.

[personal profile] escriboconundedo 2014-05-07 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
when you appreciate the work of a writer or artist, then you contribute. seriously.

so, this is what ican say -- make sure you tell the artists and writers you enjoy how you feel. they'll appreciate it, and it migt make you feel better to know that you've encouraged someone.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
OP, don't feel guilty! You're one of the reasons people write/draw/cover songs/make tribute videos/etc. These things are there to be seen and heard, even if the person seeing and hearing never makes a peep about it.

Hell, I feel guilty about not checking out ENOUGH fanworks, but that comes from being a fanfic writer and only having just enough time to work on my own crap while maybe checking out a short story or two every now and then.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Artists and writers really enjoy comments. That's all you have to do to give back.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
No worries about 'contributing'. Not everyone can do it or is in a position to do it, for all sorts of reasons.

Just - if you enjoy a fanwork, try to leave a comment (short & sweet is FINE), or at least a kudos. It'll make someone's day, and will encourage them to keep creating the stuff you love.

I have sometimes felt that way too. I rarely ever write fic (because I get big ideas I know I won't finish), and I am not a frequent commenter/reviewer either. When I do feel strongly about a fic, I will comment, and often if I feel that strongly, it means thoughtful comments because I am simply not a "Liked this!" reviewer.

Hopefully you'll find things along the way you feel strongly enough to comment on, but don't let your lack of response get you down.

As long as you give feedback, you're contributing. Comments have a lot of worth for fan creators. (At least they have for me.)

Aw honey, writers and artists love to have an audience! Comment, fave, show your love, I guarantee you'll make their day.
