You can post to [community profile] musemostwanted and request PSLs (private storylines), or take your muse to [community profile] bakerstreet, [community profile] dear_mun and [community profile] sixwordstories and talk to random people.

It's a good way to get started. You can request games at MMW and D_M.

I would also recommend Twitter RP. It can be very fluid and is great medium for just drifting around.

Here to agree with the poster above: I prefer PSLs over joining games these days, mostly because I don't have time for games but also because everything is private and easier to manage. If you're tired of wank, private rp might be a good option for you.

That said, the last game I was in was a really good experience. There were a couple jerks but they were largely ignored. The game is closed now but it was on dreamwdith and was pretty large. It's possible to find good games but it's best to do your research on them. Maybe lurk first or check out rpanons. If the game has a lot of drama, you'll probably see it before you join.

I am not sure if it helps, but I suspect this has nothing at all to do with the fact that it's RPS. All new fandoms I joined went through such things. I have learned with hindsight that the only fandoms where such things did not happen all the time were fandoms which I hardly knew, the ones where the real interesting stuff was happening behind the scenes and I just wasn't in the know and thus I learned about such things years later.

My very first fandom? The very day I joined the main ML, it exploded in one of the worst flame wars ever.

These happened regularly, along with BNFs flouncing, websites disappearing suddenly without warning etc. And OMG, the number of WIPs that never got completed... about 95% of all fics were WIPs, of which I'd estimate less than 10% ever got completed. But I was young and naive and the drama kind of got to me: this boot camp helped me since then, teaching me that fandom requires the utmost neutrality and constant positive attitude. Though even that is not sufficient to avoid drama popping up all around you.

Bottom line: it's not you, it really is them!

I hate when that happens. You know it's just a coincidence but you can't help but feel like crap after it ends up that way.

I felt a bit that way when the group I was in last year collapsed. I am glad I had a friend I was doing side-RP with, I could distract myself with those plots and in some ways expend the emotion the group collapse caused in RP with her (seriously, I had my character have a bad dream, bad enough for tears, and she ran to her boyfriend to cuddle. It helped a lot).
