When there's a thread on FS that doesn't interest me for whatever, I skip it. I don't even bother commenting to let everyone know how much it doesn't interest me because I figure there's no need to rain on everyone else's parade. It's 100% win-win: I don't have to read stuff I don't want to read, nor do I have to put in any effort whatsoever to protest a discussion threat that's going to happen regardless of my feelings.

It's a radical approach, but it might work?

Someone who makes a point of posting a comment signaling their unhappiness with a topic they could easily skip and pairs it with a bored/jaded gif clearly wants attention. You and I are simply obliging them.

No, they do not clearly want attention. What they clearly are doing is expressing an opinion. "This is boring" is an opinion. "This makes me unhappy" is an opinion.
