I think you're right in that Hoechlin has a monster crush on Dylan. Imo it's not romantic but they obviously adore each other. They are usually smiling, laughing and having fun when together. They, along with Posey, will probably be friends for life. I don't know that that translates to the characters for everyone (to explain the popularity) but it doesn't hurt that they get along so well and are adorable while doing it.
