Yeah, I have yet to hear anyone outside of the Renaissance be able to make a good living off of fanart. The market isn't there. Only artists who are already super famous in the comic industry or the art world can demand high commission prices because people are willing to pay for it. The rest are charging anywhere from five to twenty bucks a pop. Not exactly raking in the dough with those prices.

Really? Because Furries.

Because furries what? Usually they want original work for one thing, but even then, unless you're incredibly talented and/or famous, you're probably not gonna pull down your living doing Furry work. Big problem with Furry work is that there is such a shared style across the board that most folks can get the piece they want from someone who'll charge a third of what it's worth at most.

This is literally the thing I was about to post.

I just paid almost $120 commish for fan art. The good artists who don't underprice themselves? They can absolutely pay their rent with a couple of commishes.

My ex-roommate was absolute shit (and she did pro ink work for indie comics!) and even she could rake in dough. The only thing that prevented her was lousy work ethic. Her art's terrible, but people paid through the nose for it when they wanted it. I never understood it, but hey, fanarts from someone with "pro" credit, etc etc, it sold when she could be arsed to finish a fucking commish.
