I'm always shocked that fan artists make money for their stuff. Fandom is for fun, not profit. As soon as you make it about profit, it changes...and not for the better.

And honestly, OP, your attitude is a real good example about how it would change for the worse.

Um, what? What do you mean "one of those we are shocked that an artist would charge for doing what you ask of them"? I mean, I don't get what you're saying.

I'm not butthurt. I write fanfic because I love the universe I write in, and I love writing. I'd love to write something one day and make a buttload of money off it, but I never once considered using my fanfic for that reason. Fanfic is for love of generating new stories in the world you love, getting feedback (if you're lucky and people like it), seeing it recc'd on lists, all that. It's not about "write A/B in this situation and make sure you add in blah, blah, and if you could make character C die an ugly death, I'll pay more."

And putting all that aside, if you write or do art for the wrong fandom and the Powers that Be decided to make an example out of you, the shit would hit the fan. FOR EVERYONE.

A good deal of them are just wanting money for supplies or a new tablet. A lot of people only take commissions when they need the money, not because they want to profit.
