I know someone who makes a living and supports a family off of it. I *think* it's how he got some of his comics industry jobs. (I know that the fan art came first, at any rate.)

If he also has comics industry jobs, then no, he's not making a living purely off his fanart commissions.

I don't know if the comics things ever came through or how much that paid if it did. But I do know that for a few years, he "made a living purely off his fanart commissions." And that, like some fanfic writers, someone saw his stuff, liked it, and had a word with someone else.

but how do you know his wife isn't/wasn't working to support the family? or if he was getting financial help from someone?
