(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)So tell me, HOW do you read a movie/TV show? Besides getting a hold of a copy of the script? Or maybe a tie-in book? Oh, oh, I know! Subtitles!
That's where your argument falls apart, and in fact, using your justification, fanartists SHOULDN'T be able to make money, because the people doing the commissioning are looking at fanart rather than the original media.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)However, I know several people who have stopped watching things because their pairing didn't become canon or they didn't like how a plot twist turned out and instead switched to reading AU fic that went they way they wanted it to. So yes, fanfic can definitely be used as a substitute for the original source material. I've never heard anyone stop watching something to look at fanart instead.
