Book Club Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Book Selection June 2014

Voting guidelines
So, if I understand correctly, the situation is that each IP can only vote once, but you can vote for multiple books within that one vote.

I understand there may be a work around for some people, dunno what's up with that, maybe if you have something funky with your IP address you can vote more than once? Dunno the techy shite, but there it is and I don't know how to change it. If this applies to you, would you kindly not abuse the your ability to mulit-vote, Keep it fun for everyone, even if that means you don't get to read your preference this time out, not going to be much of a book club if you only read stuff you know you want to read.

Happy Voting

fuck. ok. let me re-re-look into it. sorry about this.

Was it radial buttons or tick boxes? Try refreshing it. It should be tick boxes but the first run was radial buttons, and I thought I'd saved the change, but maybe not. Have re-saved, sorry about that.

Radial buttons. I can't vote again, it's only displaying the poll results. It's okay, just thought you should know.

Are you happy with the one vote you did get? I haven't voted yet, so if you're not happy with what you ended up voting for, I'll let you add my vote to what you want.

So, question: You have disabled the Location Tracking, yes? I am OK with the one-vote-per-IP restriction.

Re: Book Club Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-07 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
yep. that was a different poll. this poll has the option for location tracking with a premium account and you may rest assured I am not spending money on this endeavour.

Eeeeeexcellent.

I am so sold on the Golem and the Jinni. I think I'm going to read it regardless, so thank you, person that suggested that book.

Agreed. I kinda like the sound of it myself. I'll read whatever wins, because, well book clubs are supposed to push you into new stuff, but I do hope TGATJ wins.

I missed the "Sell Me Your Selection" thread (baww timezones), but I ended up not voting for the book I nominated, because this one looks 1000% better:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_Swim-Two-Birds

In case anyone is on the fence/trying to decide.

Re: Book Club Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I suggested that but I never tried to sell it because I've never actually read it. But I really want to.

It's supposed to be really good, and one of the first things to be really metafictional and do that. I've also read other things by the same author and he is absolutely HILARIOUS. So I think it would be enjoyable and not too tough of a read, but also give a lot of good stuff to write about.

AYRT

Just started reading it. The first paragraph sold me, and that's what it takes, to get me to follow through on a book, these days. (I don't read nearly as much non-nonfiction as I should, anymore.)

"HAVING placed in my mouth sufficient bread for three minutes' chewing, I withdrew my powers of sensual perception and retired into the privacy of my mind, my eyes and face assuming a vacant and preoccupied expression. I reflected on the subject of my spare-time literary activities. One beginning and one ending for a book was a thing I did not agree with. A good book may have three openings entirely dissimilar and inter-related only in the prescience of the author, or for that matter one hundred times as many endings."

SOLD. Even if the Book Club doesn't pick it up, I'm definitely reading. Thanks for the rec, nonny!

It's not letting me edit the poll. FUCK. Ok. Sorry about this. One book one vote this time out. Shit. next one will be better. Fucking hell.

Re: Book Club Poll AMENDMENT

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think it's better this way. Multiple book selection voting sounds like there would be too much of a chance at having a tie or something.

I like multiple votes because I don't have to worry about whether a book I like is going to have enough support that it could win so I'm not wasting my vote on it, or anything.

Re: Book Club Poll AMENDMENT

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-08 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kinda agree. sorry. Next month will be better. learning curve and all that shite.

Re: Book Club Poll AMENDMENT

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-08 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I like the idea of people picking their top three or so books. Kinda felt like it made up for the only being able to vote once thing, but even so, the problem is I said it would work one way, people expected it to work that way, and I fucked it up. It doen't really matter which one is better, the important thing is it works as advertised, and for that I am sorry. I'll make sure to double check everything next time.

OK I can see where you and the other anon are coming from. That does make sense. And the poll, in whatever form or fashion, has already pushed me to check out one of the selections irrespective of whether or not it ends up at the top of the list. So it's all good?

There are definitely growing pains with anything new, especially when you're using an external website/host for convenience's sake. I wouldn't stress too much over it. No one is holding you up to any excruciating standards here or anything LOL.

Re: Book Club Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i got an error the first time i tried to vote, so i had to try again before it went through. like i said i don't think it registered the first time, but if you're keeping track of ips and sees one there more than once, well, you know it wasn't on purpose.

Re: Book Club Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
IP is automated, I think; the_missing_y shouldn't be able to see them, the EasyPolls website just uses IP logging to prevent poll-rigging.

Re: Book Club Poll

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
OH, I'm not checking jack shit. For one, I don't know how, and even if I did, I have to sleep because I'm going to work in 5 hours. for the whole "Don't abuse the multi-vote" thing you all are on the honour system. Honest mistakes wont hurt the voting balance, don't think people will be able to hold it against you, and like I say, I've not the time nor inclination to check up on who voted how many times.

Don't know why it didn't register your first vote, though. Are you happy it at least recorded your second vote?

Re: Book Club Poll

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
oh yes, it wasn't a problem or anything! just gave me some typical error, and for all i know it could've been my isp acting up for a second there. i'm sure my second vote registered just fine, thanks for asking <3
