People have always retold and reshaped stories, yes. Does that erase a need for new, original content? FUCK NO.
The fact that our entertainment industries endlessly recycle popular material has nothing, NOTHING to do with fanfic, and fans, and the internet. It has everything to do with them not wanting to take a risk on untested, new material because they boil everything down to profit margins.
Oh and "mostly female original Star Trek fans who nursed an unseemly obsession with getting Kirk and Spock to get it on"?
He can fuck right off.
