Yeah, same.
I didn't start watching because of Sterek, but I had seen lots of posts about it before and also from people who said that they don't understand how it became the main ship.
I do get shipping them, I just don't get how they've become this... juggernaut with lots of fans insisting they're almost canon.

Like Destiel has a lot of delusional fans who think it will become canon one day too, but last time I checked (and it has been a while since I watched an episode of SPN so correct me if I'm wrong) Dean andCas actually interact regularly and are clearly important to each other. I get why lots of people hardcore ship them.
With Sterek I don't really get the hardcore devotion.

I just don't get how they've become this... juggernaut with lots of fans insisting they're almost canon.

It's the fandom favorite character plus the hottest guy they can get top/bottom dynamics out of, and that's all it needs to be in the beginning, other reasoning aside. See also: Steve/Tony and Loki/Tony in Avengers, Levi/Eren and Levi/Erwin in SNK, Kirk/McCoy and Kirk/Spock in the new Star Trek movies, and dozens more I'm sure.

I think the only thing that makes Sterek more of a juggernaut than usual is the fact that a lot of people don't find Scott particularly hot or manly.
