I don't see it as necessarily negative or racist, but more realistic. A lot of interracial kids feel the need to go one way or the other. The denial that Tom and Jasmine seem to give off shows it a bit more strongly, and Huey's reaction to it takes it the opposite way.
It's more a satirical reflection that the middle doesn't feel like enough to some people and being forced to choose, which Jasmine has as a real struggle.
