Knights of Sidonia

Just caught up with this.

So they've taken a story from Tsutomu Nihei, the author of Blame!, NOiSE, and Biomega, all works and I know this is tremendously overused, but works with a geiger-esque quality, with an unsettling blend of man and machine in a sexualised fashion, large sections without dialogue, no extended explanations of the world, and the concept of being lost in almost empty bizarre alien environments of incredible scale.

And they've chosen to basically make a passable gundam anime with a slight hint of his concepts, and incredibly low budget cgi rotoscoping that makes the characters look alien in all the worst ways.

has become

except it doesn't look as good in motion.

We could have had something as experimental as Texhnolyze's first episode but instead, we get this.

(still going to watch it all though)

<3 Moesucks.

Anyway more on topic, I hope this sort of animation style doesn't catch on. It looks so fucking bad. Especially in motion.

I haven't read the manga yet, but from the snippets that I've seen here and there, it looks likes it's the "cleanest" art that Nihei has produced. It doesn't surprise me that it got an animated adaptation. I do miss Blame's and Biomega's grittiness and sense of scale, though.

I agree that the animation isn't stellar, but I'll be happy if this introduces more people to his work. I feel like it's pretty accessible, maybe even his most accessible work to date.

How creepy/gory/unsettling/disturbing is the manga? I'm intrigued, but I dunno if I can stomach it...

Not gratuitously so, but it's there.

And there's a lot of body horror.

Leans more towards disquieting than outright disturbing and gory. Think Alien.
