You've already made it about them. You don't get to complain that they then take offence because intent isn't magic, and if you don't want people to think you're talking about them, don't use a blanket term they're a part of?

I get that expecting someone to think two seconds about what they're posting is tone policing, but really now.

People make blanket statements. It's a mental shortcut. Our brains aren't going to start working a different way just because some people get offended and think that someone is always talking specifically about them.

The real problem is when people don't have enough self-awareness to realize when they're making a shortcut, and start to transform it into bigotry; or when people get offended when a blanket statement is made that includes them while going around making blanket statements about others.

You mean like feminists who go "But not all feminists are like that/feminism isn't about that" when someone complains about toxic radfems?
