By metagame do you mean talking game strategies, optimization, and such?

Something like that. Pokemon allows for wifi battles (the latest game calls it the Battle Spot) so the metagame is about putting together a Pokemon team to use against other, real life people. But most people into the metagame play on the Pokemon simulator called Pokemon Showdown!. It's not really about the actual games themselves, some metagame fans aren't even into the Pokemon games' main plots.
