There was a time when I read a lot of Cormier, and in retrospect, I have no idea why. I liked Eight Plus One because it seemed to be depressing with a purpose, and We All Fall Down at least had some good ideas, but most of his other stuff seemed mean-spirited (After the First Death) or nihilistic in a really bland and simplistic way (The Chocolate War.) It's telling that one of his most idealistic stories, The Bumblebee Flies Anyway, is about terminal patients dying one by one.

After The First Death as actually the first book I read by him. Though my favorite is probably The Rag And Bone Shop.
