I personally do feel like Batman comics have become that 'gritty and edgy for the sake of it'. Everything seems so miserable right now. I blame it all on Grant Morrison (and Frank Miller. And Christopher Nolan.). Again, I haven't read Court of Owls, but I did read Scott Snyder's Batman stuff he wrote just before the reboot, and it was heading in that direction.
If you like Burton and the cartoons, maybe try getting into Batman with another graphic novel? But if you are looking to get into nu52 Batman comics, Court of Owls would still be a good choice.
