WTF?

I don't get what this has to do with anything? Belgium is one of several countries which has French as one of its national languages (also, Switzerland, Canada etc. )

I have not made a complete, exhaustive study of the matter, ie how many countries are French speaking, but why are you saying that as if it invalidates the poor guy or as if it's weird that people speak French in countries that are not France? Have you heard of the French colonial empire, or French history in general?

Lots of people speak in English in Canada, and that's not England. And in New Zealand, though it's not the UK either. or the US for that matter and you don't mention the number of times singers from former British colonies cover originally British songs?

If the OP had made a secret about a Beatles song being very often covered by lots of non-English speaking singers, would you have posted a similar off the wall reply about how some famous American or Australian bands had also made covers of that song?

Or are you jumping on this thread to discuss an entirely unrelated topic, to wit: the fact that most Americans are shamefully unaware that Jacques Brel was Belgian, not French? If so, I think several hundred famous Canadians assumed to be Americans because they live in the US would love to commiserate with you (also, Dr McKay of Stargate Atlantis I guess: thank God for sleeve patches in SGA! Maybe we should implement them in real life, just like we do in the tennis ATP world tour lists of players?)

And to be fair, most Americans are really vague about Luxemburg too...

PS: oh and it just so happens that out of three official languages in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, one is French as well. The horror! :D

Quiz (for people who think I am being too harsh on the American educational system: what are the other two official languages of Luxemburg?

The problem with that quiz is that this is the internet, and everyone has a search engine at their fingertips.

I believe I said "people" and not "Americans". Have I heard of the French colonial empire and history? Why, yes I have. I AM FRENCH.

French and commiserating with Belgian people who get left out of internet discussions about French-speaking music in English-speaking forums (notice I said: English-speaking, and not American - and I happened to see Stromae confused for a French person just a week before. I'm not mocking, I am mentioning it.).

Additionally, I was also answering a comment made by rubbertea. I was not trying to be witty, not trying to show-off and not trying to insult anyone for not knowing (the horror) the finer points of the smaller countries of Europe. It was a comment, one line, and not an entire speech on the horror of the American education system, complete with European contempt and snide laughter (evil cat petting included).

Now, I don't know why I spent such a long time writing an answer as it is arguably late to the party and I don't even know if you're even amenable to hearing me out, trolling, or just wanted to get something out of your chest that had barely anything to do with me in the first place.
