I don't doubt that people thinks like that, but speaking as someone studying film and television at Uni:

We are the biggest bunch of geeks you will ever meet, including our Professors and guest lecturers*. We want to work in television and/or film because it is pretty much our favourite thing in the world! We want to become the next big thing, we want to create shows and films because we know how much we love them and was/are affected by them.

We spend days, weeks or years analyzing, writing, producing and talking about them... Films and television shows are our biggest love and we do really, really obsess over it. We might get paid to do it and for us it is called academia or a job, but really it is the same... No one becomes a director or producer because they don't love films and television shows.

And then turning around and not respecting those who love things the same way we do minus the education and/or job in it is just fucking idiotic. Especially as those people probably have a lot more job security than we do, and also shorter work hours...

I would imagine it is the same for actors and actresses, but really I don't know any.

*Last one was a pretty big film music composer in Norway, who spent half the lecture talking about films and shows with cool soundtracks, and which films/shows made him (and us) want to work in film/tv.
