Do you believe in fate?

[personal profile] mekkio 2014-05-09 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mean, "It was our destiny!" type fate but the type of fate where if you say, "Oh, that's never going to happen to me!" it happens because you tempted fate. (We call that "Murphy's Law" in the States, too.)

That fate.

Has anything like that ever happened to? Where you went, "Oh, that will never happened" only for it happen? What happened?

On a logical basis I know that it only seems like that happens, and we tend to overemphasis and pay too much attention to the relatively few times were something bad actually does happen after you think it's never going to, but... On an illogical basis, I am superstitious as hell and knock on wood pretty frequently to ward it off.

Also, I've always heard Murphy's laws was: Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Is it different where you're from?

Murphy's Law is the same thing as tempting fate. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Or in this case, by saying, "This will never happen," you are guaranteeing that it will go wrong.

I will freely admit that I'm superstitious that way.

For instance, saying "never have I ever had a yeast infection" was kind of asking for it.

Nope. Do not believe it and nothing like that has happened.

Nah, not really. I'm with the first anon there, it's just people overemphasising the few times that it does happen. I think coincidences and things like that are pretty neat, though. And I do so like a good ghost story.

One time I was feeling down about being in my mid twenties and still in college. That night, not even kidding, I met a 40 year old who'd been in college for nine years her second time around.

I find Murphy's Law pretty true to life, though in its "whatever can go wrong, will" form rather than in this one. But "whatever can go wrong, will" is not fate, it's just reality.

Nah, but then I try not to overthink things like that these days.

I'm really unlucky though. I never win giveaways or anything random like that.

I don't believe that there is a net benefit to behaving as if there is such a thing as fate, and there are known situations where belief in fate had a negative effect, so I don't consider fate to be a useful concept. That's not the same as belief or disbelief, but it's at least disinterest. (Besides, belief is a form of respect, and I don't respect any being that's responsible for the state of the world.)

I was playing a pirate card/board game with my coworkers on Monday, and I decided to lay my entire stake of the game on the last turn and a final dice roll. I even said, "THIS IS IT. ALL OR NOTHING."

...I rolled a one. Ended up dead last.

No. That's woo woo thinking, right there. If a person goes through life thinking that they're exempt from shitty things happening to them, well of course they're going to be wrong sooner or later. There's nothing magical about that.

Not really.

Although I did think I was getting better this week and posted to that effect only to wake up the next morning sicker than I had been. My first thought was, "That's what you get for tempting fate, Lorraine."

I have learned never to say "Well, at least today can't get worse!"

Because yes. It always can.

I call that the Forces of Cosmic Irony, and I believe in it way more than a proper skeptic should.

I'm not sure I'd call it fate as much as overconfidence. Like I know pretty much anything could happen I just really hope it doesn't.

But I will call something Murphy's Law if just a lot of shit is piling up.

I don't until it happens. Last week, I was at the store and saw an Emergency Wet Phone Kit that you use when you accidentally submerge your cell phone in water. I thought briefly, "Hmm...five bucks. A worthy investment?" But as soon as I thought that I decided it would never happen to me. What happens? The next day I drop my phone in the toilet at work. I freaked out and had to wait until lunch to buy rice to put my phone in it. I'll never tempt fate again, I hope.
