I'm shocked - SHOCKED - to discover that there might be problems with sexual harassment in my extremely sexualized fandom built around the weirdest people on 4chan

I'm not in the fandom and I wasn't shocked. I'm disturbed by their reaction, because it wasn't like something like that hadn't happened before.

People love jumping to the defense of famous people, even if they are just famous in something small like the sphere of a fandom. I've seen this same issue pop up in book fandoms, when the author turns out to be kind of a scumbag, there will always be vocal defenders doing mental gymnastics to justify their idols behavior, especially victim blaming.

But yeah, that guy was a scumbag, and I'm glad that he seems to be mostly persona non grata now in a lot of circles of the fandom, this was one of those cases where the people defending his behavior brought attention from wider audiences in the fandom who were rational enough to step back and tell the guy he needed to fuck off. He actually got booted from a number of collab projects after the fact.
