Whyyyyy?

This author in my fandom has written:

$StoryTitle part 1 (12 chapters)
$StoryTitle part 2 (9 chapters)
$StoryTitle part 3 (23 chapters)

All of the parts more or less follow each other, with little passage of time in between. Why not just write one story with 44 chapters?

Maybe the author felt like there were natural breaks in the story. Or that no one would want to start reading a story with 44 chapters.

Chapters. Natural breaks in the story are called "chapters". Also, if nobody wants to read a story with 44 chapters, I'm not sure how posting a 3-part story that contains a total of 44 chapters alters reality.

I've seen it done so they could switch genre tags--say, they did ten chapters of soldiers in peacetime with a slice of life tag, then they switched to wartime and that tag no longer applied.

Why isn't Lord of the Rings just one giant thick book? Why? WHY?

IDK, I'm writing a fic right now with 4 acts, but I'm planning on publishing them all as the same story. Just the chapter titles will be "Act One - Chapter One", "Act One - Chapter Two", and so on.

Cause some people intend on writing one multi-chapter fic and decide they want to expand the universe? I don't see a problem.
