Good places to find a beta?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-10 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I am starting several fanfics soon (all MCU/Marvel), and am looking to either find a good beta for each one or find someone who is willing and able to beta all of them. Any ideas on where I should look? I've been out of fandom for a while (over a year and a half), mostly just reading fic on AO3 when I have the time and lurking around here on F!S, so I'm not sure what communities to look for/which ones are active enough to bother with. Any pointers?

I've had good luck asking writers I admire, who write the same sort of things I do. Usually they'll beta or they'll know someone who will.

Be specific about what you're looking for in a beta. Everyone has a different idea of what it means.

"I've had good luck asking writers I admire, who write the same sort of things I do. "

I've seen this advice on similar threads here before. Please keep in mind that not all writers beta, for many reasons. Getting a request out of the blue from a total stranger who wants you to invest time and effort reading their work and giving concrit when you have no way of knowing if they'll accept it graciously or throw a huge tantrum can be really awkward.

Try FFnet, where people actually have beta profiles and you can shop around.

I found a pretty good beta by just posting in the pairing tag for my fandom on tumblr. An author I admire actually offered their services.

So give that a go!

On DW, if you type in beta in the search bar and filter for communities, I'm pretty sure we have a "find a beta" community you can post in, too. :)
