The second quartet, The Circle Opens, were good books IMO, but definitely some gruesome stuff, unpleasant characters, darker storylines.

Of the third quartet, I've only read Will of the Empress, and I wasn't as thrilled with it. It was less cute mages doing magic things, and more medieval political intrigue with a side of soap-opera-worthy drama, which just wasn't what I signed up for with the series. It kept throwing me out of the story with OOC actions/attitudes/behaviors, storyline contradictions against earlier books in the series, constantly having to cross-reference the foreign language glossaries, etc. YMMV, I didn't like it.

Personally I really liked WotE, it was a great extension of the characters as they grew up. I didn't like Battle Magic, though. It really rubbed me wrong; maybe because we got Rosethorn's POV and I was more happy with how I envisioned her without going through her POV... It felt weird.
