I do not understand all the complaints going around. I don't understand why, on a show that everyone is probably going to have a horrible fate on, people are upset about charcters' horrible fates. This is a horror show; it's supposed to be horrifying. I particularly don't understand the drama over the recent episode. People seem to be doubly angry over it because Fuller promised no rape storylines (a huge thing for a showrunner to say, btw), yet Margot was sterilized last episode. Because it was a man taking away a woman's power. Which, yeah, is basically what Mason has done to Margot her entire life. More abuse, just on a massively evil scale. It was a horrible mutiliation and a violation on a show where probably EVERYONE is going to end up physically or mentally violated. But to me, it's reaching to call it a betrayal of the promise Fuller made. It's a mutiliation, plain and simple. Having a character undergo an operation against their will (even an operation on their sexual organs) is NOT the same as having a character be held down by a man and used for sex against their will. It just seems like fandom used to be more positive, and now, every episode it's nothing but complaints about what's being done to female characters. And like, I just don't see it? And I usually see it. I see it on other shows I love (hello, GoT), but I just don't see it here. The only thing I do sort of see it on is Beverly, but I also think she's just the first of a massive body count to come. By the end of the show, I doubt anyone is alive, except maybe Will, and he'll probably wish he weren't. But there just seems to be this weird dissonance in fandom where we want more female characters, but nothing bad must ever ever happen to them. I also don't get the complaints that Alana's characterization is ruined or that Bedelia outsmarting Hannibal was bad because she only 'won' by leaving town and being off camera. I've seen the blanket statement of "female charcters' only option to stay alive is to leave town, which is disappointing", which seems way too broad since that's what happened to ONE.

Agreed. And there are people who are taking Fuller's promise of, "No rape" to mean, "Nothing bad will ever happen to a woman on this show." Because every time something happens to a woman character cries of "THIS IS MISOGYNY!" come up.

Like you said, it's a horror show.

At this point, it was frustrating at first to hear these outcries but now I dismiss them altogether as people who have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the horror genre. Seriously, a man was murdered, butchered and turn into a animal-human hybrid museum piece just in the previous episode and no one bats an eyelid. But something happened to woman and it's, "OMG!"

Ugh.

I don't get this fandom so I basically reblog the occasional gif and go on my way. I think you're right in that terrible, disgusting things happen to pretty much everyone on this show regardless of gender, and considering this is a horror show I don't think people should expect anything different.

Yup. This is what happens when you decide context doesn't matter and depiction is endorsement. They took one showrunner promise and decided he meant nothing they personally find objectionable would ever happen on a horror show, which is ridiculous. Beverly was always going to die and the whole Margot and Mason storyline is way worse in the source material he's dealing with, but never mind that.

I wish he would respond to the criticisms with a tweet of, "Read the damn books." and nothing more than that.

Yeah, really. All I've done is flip through the books over the years since the SOTL movie came out (have now bought the first two and will read them all over the hiatus) and I know this stuff just by paying attention and reading interviews and such. It's not that hard. But then you get people blaming him for not depicting her exactly as she was in the book, which would have caused eleventy times more wank. He's been so much nicer than I ever would be, lol.

Agreed, so damn much, about the Margot thing.

I get so much second-hand embarassment from the people flipping their shit over it.

Then again, I'm just delighted at Margot's character, since the last show I watched was Sherlock. Compared to Irene, they handled her sexual identity 100000x better.

The only thing I would disagree with you on is Alana. I was pretty disappointed by what they did with her for most of this season. She just sort of... sat around, and had lots of hot sex with Hannibal. Which, you know, good for her, but I wish they'd given her something interesting and plot relevant to do.

(I was also pretty upset with Bev's death, but I've come around on that, because it is a horror show, and she's a minor character.)

But yeah. The people calling for the show to be cancelled? Totally overreacting. They remind me little kids throwing a tantrum. STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!

Hrmmmm. I don't watch the show, but i've read Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal (And Black Sunday, too, years and years ago).

So when people say 'read the books', what are they talking about? The one book i *didn't* read? None of the characters besides Will and Hannibal ring a bell *at all*.
