Fairy tales involving dreams

(Anonymous) 2014-05-11 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm working on a story where fairy tales invade a small town, and since it's going to span a couple days I'd like them to start invading people's sleep as well. Can anyone think of fairy tales in which characters have significant dreams? Off the top of my head, I have Beauty dreaming of the handsome prince lost somewhere in the Beast's castle, and the trope where a princess dreams her father will someday bow to her and he casts her out.

Would Midsummer Night's Dream count? It's not strictly a fairytale....

In The Tinder Box, a magic dog carries a princess away in her sleep but she seems to only remember it as a dream the next day. Not sure if you could tweak that at all?

Sleeping Beauty

Depending, of course, on which version.

Also, anything with the Sandman.

A mare or nightmare is an evil spirit or goblin in Germanic folklore which rides on people's chests while they sleep, bringing on bad dreams.

There's the Baku - Japanese supernatural beings that devour dreams and nightmares.

And I don't know if you would count these:
Alice in Wonderland
Wizard of Oz

The Snow Queen has a scene where Gerda sees dreams, like spirits, entering a palace.

In The Wild Swans, Elisa dreams about how to break the curse on her brothers.

The Ram by Madame d'Aulnoy is one with the plot point you mentioned - the princess dreams that her father will wash her hands and he exiles her.
