I'm not sure I like the idea that a person can either be anti-colonialist or pro-human rights.

I don't think it's defensible for people who are not from or do not live within a country try to tell it how best to fix its own problems. But I also think that extreme cultural relativism can lead to hand-waving a lot of very terrible things.

It's a known conundrum in the field of anthropology.

But the discussion tends to lean towards a case-by-case approach. It's still one thing to try and improve the situation of women in certain communities, and another to come in, destroy the economic system of a group, steal or deny them their resources, or segregate them into convenient labels.
