I agree. Personally it's not about the 'forbidden' aspect it's just that the friendship between two guys is portrayed as this pure and unbreakable thing. Whereas if there is a female involved it's somehow not as strong and it always turns out to be romantic or sexual. When a romantic relationship falls out it causes distance and sometimes bitter feelings, whereas friendships falling out can still come back stronger.

I can't quiet explain it... but it's extremely rare to see a male/female relationship that is platonic where nobody doubts how much they care about each other and you can joke about how 'married' they are without there being any actual romance involved. You can say that about so many 'bromances' but I can't really think of a male/female equivalent.
