I haven't watched Ponyo . . .

. . . but this is my problem with a lot of works that try to make viewers sympathize with a force of nature. It hurts or even kills people, often people who didn't intentionally harm it, but I'm supposed to root for it because it's innocent, and I just want the antagonists to kill it before it hurts anyone else. (The Petaybee series is the worst example of this ever.)

Well, I never felt you were truly supposed to root for Ponyo, in the same way you don't root for the ocean. Sometimes its dangerous, sometimes it's wonderful, you can love it, in a way, but it's just... itself.
