There's this idea going around (....ok, on tumblr, mostly) that colonization was violent only because it was perpetuated by white people. And I really don't know how far you have to bury your head in the ground and chant "people of color are perfect, enlightened angels" to believe that

Yeah that's a thorny one.

If you put one group of people in a position of power, they're pretty much guaranteed to be dicks to minority groups - regardless of skin color. History is littered with examples of people of all races committing heinous crimes against each other.

Yeah, that's one of those instances of people being racist while trying to show how not racist they are. FFS.

Also, if you look at it a certain way, violent colonization happened to white people as well. Look at the things Romans and Vikings did. People tend to be shitty to groups they're trying to take over and oppress. That's kind of the point.

Not that it makes what Europeans did to Native Americans, Africans and other groups any better - but it wasn't the first time that happened.

This might be a stupid question, but how well does Genghis Khan map to colonial-style conquest? Can the two approaches be paralleled, or are they too different?

I am not an expert, but I don't think they could be easily paralleled. Just because the means by which the Mongols and the imperialists made their conquests, the way they ran their empire, and especially the economic and political structure and the economic logic of imperialism and colonialism are just really distinct. I mean, one of the fundamental elements of colonialism is the whole concept of the metropole-colony relationship and that is I think just not at all present in the Mongol conquests.

I'd like to hear their thoughts on Pre-Columbian civilizations in the Western world where colonization by such empires as The Inca, Mayan and Aztecs were the norm.

This is such a stupid argument. Nonwhite people have done that before and it wasn't any better. (Remember when Japan tried to take over Korea and China? Yeah, that wasn't sunshine and roses)

Eh... Japan did do it as a direct reaction to Western colonialism, but on the other hand that sure didn't make it suck any less for the Koreans and the Chinese.

Yeah. Japan basically got asked by the British Empire to look after its possessions in the Pacific and Indian Ocean Area during WW1. Trouble is that Japan kinda got used to the idea, and after handing them back started planning on how to get into that Colonial Business themselves, fast forward a few years... Yet another lesson in how the pointless slaughter of WW1 fashioned WW2.
