Weirdly Memorable Mediocre Stories

[personal profile] inthecorner 2014-05-11 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so we all know that not every book, movie, play, video game, what ever is not entirely good, but not entirely bad. There is a great deal of mediocre titles that just slip under the radar and never really remembered other than that book you read while waiting for your plane or whatever.

But, sometimes, there are some stories that just stick around in your memory for some reason or another. Like there was a this book called "Wonderous Strange" and the only reason I remembered is because of the title (it sucks), it had a pooka in the story (that's cool), and the main lead was named Sonny, of all things. Otherwise, it was unmemorable all around.

So, anyone else have weirdly memorable but other wise average stories?

There was this story posted on deviantart that I read a few years back. It was just so bad, but I still ate it up. I tried to re-read it but the spark was just not there anymore. Plus the author has other projects she's working on so there hasn't been a new chapter in years.

I wouldn't call it a good book, but Hopscotch by Kevin J Anderson is weirdly readable despite violating almost every rule of how to tell a good story. I actually recommend it if you can find a copy, just to show that so many seemingly ironclad writing rules are really more like guidelines. (Also, it has a body-swapping threesome, which I guess is pretty cool.)

I remember reading that! The threesome was the only part I liked though. :(

I remember two short story from a horror antology I must have read at least 10 years ago. I don't remember the titles or the other stories at all though.
One of them I think I remember because of how... mediocre it was. I think it was going for creepy but was just very wtf in a very boring way. People where given a plushie when they were born and the plushies grew with them and were their best friend or something, until one day the plushies all rebelled and killed their owners... I think.
The other one was on a farm, and had some kind of superintelligent mutant foxes that went around killing people in a field. That one I think I remember because it freaked younger me out, for some reason.

The Pirate's Son. I remember almost nothing about it, but for some reason I still think of it as one of my favorite books. I just can't shake the idea that I really enjoyed it even if I haven't read it again.

I'm reminded of this dumb movie I watched years ago about this lady who discovers a sealed-off 13th floor in a hotel that a serial killer has been using as his little murderin' playground.

It's not a very good movie as I recall. But it was, uh... well, I still remember it!

The film I, Robot.

It's not a very good film, but the robot character of the title, Sonny, was pretty interesting.

It's not a very good film? I love that movie, anon. I had no idea this was an unpopular thing.

oh god i'm so sorry

um yeah it wasn't well received critically. i mean, it wasn't considered TERRIBLE, but it wasn't that good either. generally it wasn't that popular with people (especially those who were fans of the books, since it was really an "in name only" type of thing.)

i did like it though.

I kinda feel like this is what Harry Potter is. A mediocre story, but there's just something about it.
