Re: Controversial opinions

I expressed gratitude for a lesson my mom taught me about being skeptical but didn't say the words "Happy Mother's Day" in my post. I said that I would honor my mother by continuing to think about the information I encounter and would do so every day. My aunt got on my case because I didn't include those three words. What if I feel pressured into saying them and know that if I typed them they would ring hollow? What if I want to be more specific?

(I know this isn't really controversial, but given how motherhood is put on a pedestal in the US and how many forces in the [social] media put pressure on people to damn near idolize their mothers, I am not entirely surprised that I got some negative responses.)

IA, I hate this crappy "guilt people into loving their mothers for 1 day" shit. All the posts about how wonderful mothers are and all. Someone got on my case some years back because his mother had died, and I wasn't gushing enough about my physically-and-emotionally-abusive mother. People don't deserve blind praise just for being something.

I knew there was a reason why I don't post publicly about things like today. It's so rote.

I don't actually like Mother's Day.

To me, it sort of reads as: "Well, since you do all this unpaid manual labour for us, here, have this one day of the year, where we can sell more stuff!"

Not to mention issues around this weird idolizing of motherhood & babies, (not that mothers & babies are bad, they're awesome, but they're just sort of put on a pedestal and women are expected to be maternal).

As well as this pressure on people who may have had abusive mothers, to be grateful. For those people who didn't know their mothers at all, it must be a tough time.
