I'm not sure how you think that's a controversial opinion. That's pretty much just fact; just ask anyone who works in animal care. The majority of people get pets for all the wrong reasons, which they then give up to shelters to be killed. People are stupid.

If you said, "I think stupid people shouldn't be allowed to obtain animals" then we'd be on the way to a real controversial opinion.
