I truly think kids these days are worse than they were when I was young. I know everyone likes to go "Oh, when you were a kid adults said the same thing" but my dad's a teacher in elementary school and has been doing it for a few decades and he's said he feels like the kids he teaches now are more disrespectful and allowed to get away with more than they used to. He tells me some stuff that kids in his classroom have done that gets them sent to the office and then sent back to class with ice cream that would've gotten kids in my class suspended (and did, he had a kid throw a chair at someone a year ago who just got sent to the office for the day, a kid in my third grade class did that and was suspended for a week). I think parents are so into how special their kids are that even the horrid little brats just get diagnosed as having some kind of special need when they're really just horrid brats who need to be disciplined better. No, the reason Little Johnny can't finish any of his worksheets and needs to be allowed to walk around the classroom doing whatever he wants while everyone else works isn't because he has ADHD, it's because he's a spoiled shit who knows he won't be punished for it.

I agree. It's not that kids have gotten progressively worse over the course of decades, I think it's only become an issue in the last 15 years or so. I went to tough schools and the kids were pretty much the same kind of people in the 90s as in the 80s.

I think what happened was we spent too much time telling the last generation they're special and important and that children should be coddled and excused and they took those lessons to heart, grew up, and now they've gone and done it to their kids. I think it goes hand in hand with phenomenons like helicopter parents and the obsession with "structured playtime."

Unless of course they do something truly, unspeakably horrible, like bringing a tiny plastic GI Joe gun or a butter knife to school or (horror of horrors!) hugging another child on school grounds. Then the only reasonable course of action is to expell the little shit or have them arrested. *Nods sagely*
