That's an issue of totally different cultural values, though. From a Japanese perspective, children are except to be much more responsible at a much younger age. To a Japanese audience, it doesn't look like neglect, it looks like dedication to her job and trust in her son's maturity.

I agree that from an American perspective, there's a bit of me going "they're going to die soon anyway - shouldn't you be taking care of your six year old? Not to mention the little kid you just found?" But the creator's perspective and worldview is very different.
