Oh man, I thought this was going to be a Bill Peet secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But is it as bad as queef?

What about moist? That's the one I always hear thrown around as grossest word.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but that one isn't an onomatopoeia. I don't mind it, either. It just sounds like a word to me.

"Whump" is such a weirdly satisfying word to me, no idea why. I really like it.

But I don't think "clop" is onomatopoeic? It's more like a pun.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, isn't it for the sound a horse makes when it takes a step and/or someone that walks heavily. You know, they clop? Or does it mean something else in fandom?
riddian: (Bee stare)

[personal profile] riddian 2014-05-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaaaaaaahahaha yes it has a very different meaning in fandom. It means masturbating to porn of My Little Pony.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
riddian: (Bee stare)

[personal profile] riddian 2014-05-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Now you know! -=*

So yeah, I would be really concerned if that kind of clop were onomatopoeic.

YAY WUMPS I LOVE THEM SO AND ALSO PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ELSE BY BILL PEET

that was also one of my mom's favorite childhood books and we refer to capybaras as wumps as a private joke between us

Huh, I've never heard this word until now.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It started out as a term in SG-1 fandom IIRC as a way to describe Daniel Jackson being put through basically everything in fic. Naturally the term branched out to other fandoms.

Thanks for the background info! I find it amusing that the word came up in two different secrets and it's the first time I've ever come across it in my life. Anyway, the more you know!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
A onomatopaeic words go, I have no problem with either whump or clop. It's the fandom definition of clop that grosses me out.

Slich/slisch/slick however I've never been a fan of. It evokes a vaguely painful sound to me:(

Those things look like capybara.

wait I don't understand... are we talking about sfx or...?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Whump" is what people on Fandom Secret call it when they want porn of someone being beaten up. (Or maybe it's porn of someone recovering from being beaten up. I never click the links, so I don't really know.) Anyway, I've never seen it anywhere other than FS.

"Clop" is what bronies say instead of "fap," because bronies are all about replacing words that don't really need replacing.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's a pretty fair description of whump (I'd say, more accurately, that it's emotional hurt/comfort porn involving one character being beat all to hell and then tended to) but it's not just in F!S. I think it's an older fandom term that's fallen out of use a bit (it was HUGE back in SGA fandom) and there are just a lot of older fandom members here.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It originated years ago in the SG-1 fandom as writer's way of terming fic that had Daniel Jackson beat - up/tortured/dead/name your poison. It spread to other fandoms as time went on.

Re: OP

but neither of them are onomatopoeia in the fandom context.

Whump is just fic where one character is excessively beaten/tortured or whatever. Whump is usually the sfx of impact, so it's like beating up/throwing somebody.
I have no explanation for clop.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
I can't stand "tinkle". No matter what its being used to describe, I can only associate it with urine.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-13 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
'Plop' does the same for me.
