Your most prominent writing/art/whatever flaw?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-13 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
What's one major flaw that you always try to work on/feel you need to work on?

For me, it's run-on sentences - I'm terrible at knowing when to just end a sentence and let the second part/clause be its own sentence, even if it "feels" like a fragment. And now I'm obsessing over that sentence to see if it's a run-on...

I can not use color to save my life.

Weak middles, I think. Lately I've noticed it's not because there's no plot happening, but because there's too much extraneous/filler stuff happening.

Procrastination.

I start out using pronouns and avoiding using names and it seems really artsy and clever up until I introduce another character.

Description. I have difficulty actually LOOKING at something rather than narrowing my viewpoint down to the relevant details, and more difficulty remembering what I saw, so when I try to write what something looks like, I have to use a lot of reference images. Even then, my descriptions are never as long as those written by other folks.

(And yes, that sentence should have split at "sentences." A good rule of thumb is that if you're using -, you should check to see if . does the same job equally well.)

I'll keep that in mind. And yeah, looking back, I definitely can see that (ironically enough, in the obsessing, I was more focused on the clause at the end, not the beginning, which is probably something else I need to work on). I use dashes a lot, actually, so this will definitely help. :) People keep telling me to "look for natural pauses" but the problem is I talk in run-on sentences so that doesn't really help. :|

Tip for a tip: "rule of five" - when describing something, try using all five senses (either literally or metaphorically, or make sure to spend a lot of time on one sense to compensate for not being able to use another one). Or: If you're looking at something/experiencing something/going somewhere, stop and write down the first five things you notice. I used to have this same problem - I am much more of a dialogue person than description/narration - and the "rule of five" for writing and just getting into the habit of observing was really helpful. :)

Plots, and using 10 words where 2 will do. I like my flowery shit dammit....

Too many details/too much description. I've gotten better at balancing it, but man, my high school writing was as purple as it gets.

On a similar note, I tend to come up with really elaborate ideas, but I never think them through. So I get really excited and then I realize the incredible amount of backstory I'd need to pull off the plot, and... yeah.

I have the same problem, aiming for really complicated or convoluted plots for often simple ideas (or at least an idea which should have been simple).

WRiting wise, I'm weak with pacing. I tend to go overboard describing things that aren't plot-relevant and end up glossing over what's important to the plot because what interests me isn't necessarily worthwhile mentioning XD
