Yeah,I haven't delved into the fandom proper very much. I've only written a few fan fics, none of them Everlark (I'm a gen-ficcer)* and never went to any of the forums or anything.

*My fics are weird, too... not widely read. One's about a pair of Capitol children playing a videogame based on the 74 Games... that's how oddball I write.

Sounds awesome! Is it on FFN or AO3? Because I would totally read that. I'm an Everlark shipper myself, but the fanfic scene itself is over-run with modern day AUs where Katniss is basically turned into the author's self-insert to act out their fantasies with Peeta. It suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1306741 It's on The Fanfiction Network, too. I also have one about a random character in a random games who eventually has the mentor her daughter, because that wasn't addressed too well in the books. If you like Nintendo... I have a crossover with Super Smash Bros. that's fairly popular that goes its own way plotwise. (I started writing it in response to seeing other people try that particular crossover only to do Hunger Games retellings with character names tacked on, when, you know, I wanted to read about actual Link and Mario and Pikachu, durnit).
