I grew up in the Twin Cities but my family is from California and I never traveled much around Minnesota as a kid. I wasn't even aware there was such a thing as a Minnesota regional accent until Fargo came out. I'd never heard anyone talk like that and I didn't believe it was a real thing until I started hearing people commenting on it. I honestly thought American regional accents were only a thing in the east and south and the rest of the country had one monolithic accent (which we almost do).
