Why would I be embarrassed by things that make me happy and don't hurt anyone else? Everyone looks down on some type of music, so it's not like there's a universally 'non-embarrassing' thing to listen to.

Agreed. It's a really stupid thing to judge somebody about. Forget if they're friendly, helpful, nice to animals, whatever--CLEARLY what matters is whether or not they listen to One Direction! Yargh!
