I think Africa, especially with the video, should be a trainwreck of a song. Like throwing Conrad and Hemmingway into a blender with early Tarzan movies with some romantic angst as a garnish. It's not even trying in the same way that Bow Wow Wow and Adam and the Ants ripped off the sound wholesale, (much less Simon's and Gabriel's collaborations). It's just dropping words. But somehow it works.

Synthpop I think can be a wide spread. I love Chris Lowe and Vince Clarke to death these days, but every now and then one of their tracks has everything and the kitchen sink, leading me to say, "what the fuck?" And there's a fair bit of just plain formula stuff in that genre as well.

Yeah. "Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti" in particular has to be one of the most awkward lines in pop ever but it somehow doesn't make the song stumble.

Re: synthpop I think formula bothers me less in general maybe, as long as it's well executed, but I definitely understand where you're coming from. Maybe we're at a far enough remove from the time that it's possible to find that weirdness almost charming. IDK.
