When a writer.completely ignores a canon love interest it tends to throw off my suspension of belief for some reason. I prefer to have the canon acknowledged and given a plausible reason for it not happening in-fic. But more and more I've just turned to shipping OT3s.

Yes, this. It's the breaking of the suspension of disbelief that annoys me as well.

All they have to do is explain the canon relationship away in one sentence, no matter how badly, and I'm happy. If they can't be bothered to do that, it doesn't augur well for the rest of the fic.

OP also agreeing to to implausibility of it all. And I'm the kind of person that usually love all characters, the love interest included, so I get angry if someone treats my babies unfairly.
