I'm more fond of the canon love interest staying in the story but their relationship never being a romantic one than I am of people leaving out the character altogether. (Unless I truly hate the character, which rarely happens.)

I also enjoy fic where you see the couple decide they aren't right for each other, but ignoring canon romances doesn't always stop me. It really depends on the individual story and how it's handled.

I don't tend to ship OT3's so that doesn't work for me.

I can behind all of that, particularly the first point. Why dump a character just because you don't want them romancing part of your OTP?

And then, who knows, maybe you'll find an OTP for them, too.

There are so many ways you can get around canon pairings that I see little reason to remove a character for that reason. Again, unless you absolutely detest them, there's lots of options.

That's happened to me before!
