I don't think ignoring the canon love interest for a oneshot that's just supposed to be self-indulgent really matters. If it's a long fic, then I'd at least expect them to acknowledge the canon pairing (whether I'd be upset if they broke it off just depends on my preferences...).

It doesn't feel bash-y to me to write out a canon pairing in favor of a preferred pairing. What's bash-y is doing it in a way that specifically bashes the left-out character.

i guess you're right. it still doesn't sit right with me, personally. if it's about the otp getting together and the canon love interest isn't mentioned anywhere, there's a voice in the back of my head that goes "hey, how come x is single all of a sudden? shouldn't he take a moment to get over z before getting involved with y?"
