Right.
What about showing your power off as a motive? Like: "I could do this the easy and quick way, or the painful, slow and visually impressive way!"

Well, I guess then technically the motive would be showing off power, not evil, but if the villain's way of showing off their power by being evil is vague and unfocused enough that the "power" justification just feels like a flimsy excuse, it would probably fit (though I think this is usually due more to the writer's laziness about making the villain's motives believable rather than just using them as a handy plot device for the heroes to overcome.)
