+1 to all of this. If I'm reading non-canon ship fic, I just want the canon love interest to be removed from the equation in a way that doesn't reek of bashing or bad characterization. I don't actually care how it happens, unless the story spends twenty thousand words with canon pairing only for the non-canon pairing to show up with no warning. That shit is annoying.

(Also, infidelity. Not a big fan.)
