How do you deal with the heat?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-15 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Seeing as far more of us than not are either dealing with warm weather or will, soon, what are some little tips and tricks you do to deal with the heat?

My favorites, though weird: when I head out, I put some PJ's/home clothes in the freezer. When I get home boiling, I pull them out of my freezer and practically run to my room to pull them on while they're still cold. It feels a little weird because my skin translates the cold as "wet" for the first minute or two even though they're not, but either way they feel great. If they don't wrinkle easily, I'll put clothes that I plan to go out in, in the freezer too, as far ahead of when I'm actually going out as I can.

The other thing I do is keep moisturizer in the fridge. It feels heavenly when I rub it into my skin.

What are some things you do?

I have a mental trick I've been doing for years where I pretend it's the coldest day in winter and I'm freezing and then I come into the room and it's lovely and warm. I do the opposite in winter and helps.

Also I don't wear clothes when I'm alone.

That is BRILLIANT.
I just leave my window open 24/7 and wear earplugs to deal with the noise. My window doesn't open far enough to let cold air in fast enough.

I also get my wrists wet because that's where the blood is near the surface, and eat food that's so spicy people joke about it being murder.

I have no real 'tricks', I just make sure to have a fan (or two) around so I can blast those puppies 24/7. I drink a lot of cold water, but I drink a lot of cold water all the time, so I'm not sure that counts.

I'm going to try your moisturizer in the fridge trick. That sounds like a lifesaver. (Funnily enough, I have done that with melted cream but never thought to do it at any other time.)

Spray bottle filled with water. Since I don't sweat (seriously - I can be outside in 100 degree heat, exercising, and I won't sweat unless I'm actually sick and have a fever breaking), this sort of is a substitute, so I just carry one around and spray myself down with it pretty regularly.

I had to do that for the first time a couple days ago. Now it's back to my electric blanket. -_-

I have an air conditioner now, but back when I didn't, my favorite trick was putting a tray of ice in front of the fan; low-tech air conditioning. Also cool showers, washing my hands in cold water, and for real cold shock that lasts for quite a bit, dipping my feet in a bucket of ice water.

The cats get cubes of ice in their water. One really bad summer, I would put damp pillowcases in the freezer and then cover them. That they always held still and tolerated this told me it was very needed.

my trick: ENJOY it, because soon it will be gone again :P

I don't really ever get too hot unless I've been exercising. Wearing shorts and a sports bra/tank all day puts me at just about the right temp when it's hot if I'm resting. Unless I'm at my parents' house, I have to bundle up there because air conditioning :(

A *very cold*, damp washcloth to the back of the neck. Amazing how cool it makes you feel. Plus a fan in a shady window - the moving air might not actually *be* cooler, but it *feels* cooler. Also - lights off unless you absolutely need them, and drapes/curtains on all sunny windows closed/down until they get shady.
