The best chef of Italian cuisine I've ever encountered is actually a Navajo guy. Which is awesome. So I don't see why a white guy couldn't be the world's most awesome at sushi, or whatever. It has to do with your specific interest and devoting yourself in a respectful way to the skill and the cuisine, and I can't get how that would be offensive.
