Sincere question: do you consider it an orientation like gay or straight or more like a preference? I just get stuck on the terminology because if you're demisexual then you still have to be hetero-,homo-, or bisexual because the term doesn't describe who you are attracted to on the rare occasions when you do feel attraction. I can understand feeling like you're different from how you've been told "normal" people are and feeling happy to find a term that describes it and defines it as a legitimate thing, so I've got no problem with the idea in itself.

I consider it more of a kind of asexuality than anything. I wouldn't call it its own separate thing like hetero-, homo- or bisexuality. Preference is a good word for it.

That makes sense to me. I sometimes have the same issue with asexuality. I get having absolutely no attraction to anyone, but the romantic aces still seem like they fit under hetero, homo, and bi since the "-sexual" refers to the physical sex of the people you are attracted to rather than who you have sex with. But they seem happy with their terminology so I mostly just keep my thoughts to myself.

It's more of a category thing. If you're ace, but are only romantically attracted to people of the same gender? You're going to be treated differently than someone who's straight, you know? They're still gay, they just lack the sexual attraction part.

I guess it's hard to describe. If I was forced to give a label, I'd be Asexual. But I'm only attracted romantically to men. Soooo, I'm straight. I don't fall under the queer umbrella just because I lack sexual attraction. I get annoyed by non-trans/gender/queer people who claim/want to be under the LGBTQ umbrella. You're not going to be assaulted or harassed for it.

I feel this way about it too.
